A Solaris Administrator Looks at OpenSolaris 2008-06-04 by Robert Escue "Let's take a closer look at OpenSolaris, particularly its use of ZFS, network problems that people have reported, the use of bash, and differences between OpenSolaris and Solaris and Solaris Express. "Using the Live CD has one distinct benefit and that is the Device Driver Utility, running this tool identifies the hardware in your machine and shows you where you could have problems in terms of device support based on the drivers that ship with OpenSolaris. If your hardware is not supported than all you have wasted is the time to download OpenSolaris and burn it to a CD.

Preview: Ubuntu 8.04 Beta 2008-03-26 by Thom Holwerda: "All in all, this release packs some interesting new features and frameworks, some of which should have been part of any Linux distribution three years ago. It is quite clearly a beta though, and definitely not ready yet to be labeled as a 'long term support' release. Let's hope they take their time to polish the rough edges, and deliver a stable release. It is needed.

10 things to consider when choosing a Linux distribution 2008-04-09 - Over at TechRepublic, Jack Wallen lists ten items to think about before choosing a Linux distribution. His items cover things like whether the distribution is 100% free, security, intended use, community, and more. "Of course, times and opinions change. For nearly 10 years I [rode] the Red Hat/Fedora wagon. And then, after considerable thought, I jumped over to Ubuntu. Why? Because it fit my evolving needs. Many will argue that one Linux distribution is just like another — and I agree, on fundamentals. But when it comes down to everyday use, each distribution is different from the next. So why would you want to use Debian vs. Fedora or Ubuntu vs. Mandriva? Let’s dive into this and find out."

11 Versions Of WINE Benchmarked 2008-02-20 by Michael Larabel: "Last December we had published benchmarks of seven versions of Wine, which covered up through the WINE 0.9.50 release. We had used two versions of Futuremark's 3DMark suite for testing, and with that we had found the performance to be stable in some cases while in later WINE releases we had found some performance losses. With the WINE project on a consistent two-week release cycle, we are looking at the WINE 3D performance and this time going back with the past eleven releases. "This time around, we have gone back and benchmarked all versions of WINE from the latest 0.9.55 release to WINE 0.9.45..."

A Date with Elyssa (Mint 5) 2008-06-24 by JunAuza "After dating Cassandra and Daryna, I spend some time with the newest Mint girl in town. Elyssa is her name or you can simply call her Mint 5. "I was really impressed with the past versions of Mint, so I made a vow to always keep track of its latest development. Since Mint 5 is derived from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, I expect it to be filled with exciting new features and should be more of like a much polished "Hardy Heron". So, immediately after its release, I downloaded the "Main Edition" of Linux Mint 5 and thoroughly tested it to see if it was able to meet my expectations.

A Frugal Experience 2008-03-25 by Beranger "Three days ago, I installed Frugalware 0.8. As the speed and the availability of the repositories is not always stellar, I decided to download the DVD1 and to install everything on it. I supposed this would give me the 'feeling of bloatedness,' something close to what you get when you install openSUSE and select everything. "I noticed that the DVD2 is never asked for, no matter what you select during the installation. I guess it's really only for when you don't have an Internet connection and you want to install extra packages from a local source..."
